Great discussion - thank you for sharing it. I really appreciate the story of how Laura created her own meeting to investigate the source of her skepticism. That is really inspiring. I have often wondered, “why has this book proven so unchangeable?” It is amazing how much the text resonates with different people.
Thanks Sam. I totally agree. I always find it admirable when people meet skepticism with curiousity, especially because I often feel like my own automatic response is usually the opposite, to nurse the skepticism and criticize.
The book is quite a cultural relic. I wonder if we will ever see significant revisions. There are alternative versions floating around there that attempt to be less gendered and explicitly Christian, for example. Maybe one day there will be different denominations of 12 step recovery with different literature.
